Many of you have read about Crofton, MD in the vibrant and descriptive posts of Margaret Woda. Margaret and I both live and work in Crofton, and both of us feel very strongly about the many benefits of the community.
Today, Crofton, MD, mourns because of a senseless act of violence that occurred on Saturday. A sixteen year old boy, riding his bike near his home, was senselessly beaten by a gang of teenagers. He died as a result of the beating and his death has shaken the community and devastated his parents, family and friends.
Chris Jones was one of the many teens we have living in Crofton. His death wasn't supposed to happen. This is small town America. Certainly, we're not immune to crime, but this level of violence is pretty infrequent.
Two suspects have already been apprehended, and the police are looking for 3 - 5 more. This probably wasn't a random act of violence. I'm sure it will turn out that he knew the assailants. I can't comprehend what grievance they had that would lead to this level of violence.
I drove by the intersection where the attack occurred this morning. Neighbors and residents have put up a make-shift memorial at the site. Prayers, pictures, flowers, notes are all part of the scene.
Small town America is not immune to crime. It can happen anywhere and any time. When it does, it's devastating.
