The Crofton, MD that we see today began as a planned community in the mid-1960's. The two main builders were Crawford and Levitt. Over the years, Crofton, MD has expanded well beyond the original borders of Rt. 424, Rt. 450 and Rt. 3. Within the confines of those roads people are still considered to be living in Crofton Triangle. As you can well imagine, and thanks to Google Maps, we see that it actually does resemble a triangle.

Olde Crofton has wide, tree lined streets with many different styles of homes. Along the way, you'll also see a couple of townhouse sub-divisions, condos and rental apartments. Single family homes dominate the real estate market within Crofton Triangle. Today, homes within Crofton Triangle are in a special tax district, and are part of the Crofton Community Association. The special tax adds a couple of hundred dollars a year onto the County Taxes, and are used to primarily fund the Crofton Police Department, as well as maintenance of the extensive common areas.

Crofton, MD (inside the triangle) is home to many classic architectural styles. Below, you can see several, but there are many variations, making the Crofton, MD real estate market very robust.

Brick Rancher - Ranchers do tend to be favored by many home buyers in Crofton, MD. One level living, does appeal to those buyers who would prefer not to climb stairs. Ranchers in Crofton, MD tend to be 3 or 4 bedroom, with a large kitchen, formal dining room and living room, all on one level. Some have basements and family rooms as well.

Split Foyer - This style is characterized by the fact that when you enter a Split Foyer, half a flight of stairs brings you to the upper level, and half a flight down to the lower level. The upper level in Split Foyers contains the kitchen, LR/DR, and usually two or three bedrooms and one or two full baths. Many Crofton, MD home buyers prefer this style because the lower level usually contains a large family room, as well as additional bedrooms and bath.

Cape Cod -This is a Cape Cod style that I'm intimately familiar with, since it belongs to me and my wife. These models were highly configurable. I've been in dozens over the years...and they all look different inside. The main attraction to this model is the first floor Master. The first floor also has one or two other bedrooms, LR/DR, master bath and guest bath, Country Kitchen and laundry room. Upstairs is another two or three bedrooms and full bath. Mine also happens to have a family room addition and finished basement.

Colonial - If there were a "typical" Maryland house, the Center Hall Colonial would probably be on top of the list. The Center Hall Colonial is a favorite of Crofton, MD home buyers. All the bedrooms, 3 or 4, and usually two full baths are on the upper level, away from the main living level. Main level contains the kitchen, LR/DR, laundry room, half bath and family room.

Dutch Colonial - Another style that is quite popular in Crofton, MD is the Dutch Colonial. As you can see, it looks similar to the Center Hall Colonial, except for the design of the roof. The interior layout of the Dutch Colonial is quite similar to the Center Hall Colonial, with the bedrooms on the upper level.

There are a lot of gyms in the country that boast a large membership. You would never know it by going inside though. Gold's Gym, located at 1625 Crofton Centre, Crofton, MD, not only has a large membership, but they use the gym...a lot. Whether its before the rush hour, or after work, the parking lot is crowded with the cars of dedicated exercisers.

Gold's Gym is the place to socialize...and sweat. Whether its aerobics, or weight training, Gold's Gym has all the equipment to meet your training needs.

Not many newer residents know it, but the location of Gold's Gym used to be the only movie theatre in Crofton, MD many years ago. Gold's bought the one screen theatre and after extensive renovations, opened the only workout center that is actually in Crofton, MD.

Other gyms in the area include LA Fitness, in Gambrills, and SportFit, in Bowie. Both excellent choices, as well.

Crofton, MD has many homes for sale in several diverse communities. Whether you like traditional or modern, classic or newer, large lot no lot, Crofton has it all.

Tucked inside the Walden Golf Course and right next to the Walden Pool, is the Fairways sub-division. If you're not familiar with the section you wouldn't even know it was there. Only two streets and 53 homes can be found at Fairways.

The homes were built in the early to mid 90s, and are all single family models. Many of the homes in Fairways have a pretty unique design. One of the models has living on 4 levels. Family room in the lower level, LR, DR and kitchen on the main level, with bedrooms on the two upper levels. 

Large, single family houses, at reasonable prices, can be found at Fairways. The lots are not large in this community and are maintained by the monthly HOA fees.

Fairways is a unique golf course community and homes don't last very long when they're on the market.

In the past year, three homes sold in Fairways. Closed prices were pretty close ranging from $415,000 to $514,950.

There is currently one active listings in Fairways listed at $499,000.

One of the charming aspects of living in Crofton, MD is the number of people out and about every day getting their daily dose of sunshine, comraderie, and exercise. Most of it isn't fancy, or costly, and the best place to go is Crofton Parkway.

Inside Olde Crofton you will find one of the main thoroughfares, Crofton Parkway. This wide street circles the community through many different sub-divisions. Crofton Parkway is the destination point for joggers, walkers, pets, bikers, baby strollers and any other kind of exercise you can think of. There are plenty of reasons for Crofton MD residents to favor Crofton Parkway.

Crofton Parkway is a picturesque oval that has sidewalks covering the entire 3.75 mile route. Gentle rolling hills and long straightaways await the walker, jogger, biker, and all.

This time of year, people exercising on Crofton Parkway will enjoy the flowering Cherry Trees that line much of the route.

Exercise doesn't have to cost a lot, and in the case of using Crofton Parkway, it doesn't have to cost anything. Get out there and visit with your friends and neighbors.

You're going to love Crofton, MD and the diversity of housing available for both, first time home buyers, and move up purchasers. Crofton, MD is a destination point for buyers relocating into the area. Crofton's location couldn't be better. Situated halfway between Washington, DC, and Baltimore; and only ten minutes from the water oriented activities of Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay. Crofton homes are some of the most sought after in the area.

Crofton Commons is one of the townhouse communities located inside the "Crofton Triangle." The "Crofton Triangle" is that area bounded by Rt. 3, Rt. 424, and Rt. 450. The growth of Crofton over the years has spread well beyond the original Crofton Triangle boundaries.

Crofton Commons comprises a sub-division of 92 townhouses, build in the mid-1970's. Most of the units are three level but there are some two level's tucked into the community as well.

Crofton Commons can be accessed directly off of Crofton Parkway, between Farnborn St. and Jordan Ave. There is also an entrance to Crofton Commons directly off of Rt. 424.

Property tax records indicate that the above ground living area in the Crofton Commons townhouses is between 1400 - 1700 sq. ft. Many of the Crofton Commons townhouses also have finished basements.

In the past year, 4 houses have sold in the Crofton Commons sub-division. Prices on the sales ranged from $299,900 - $345,000.

There are currently two townhouses under contract in Crofton Commons.

Crofton, MD, and all the sub-divisions located in the Crofton MD real estate area are an easy commute to and from Ft. Meade, for those military and civilian families moving into the area.

The drive from Crofton Commons to Ft. Meade is approximately 12 miles.

Crofton Commons is an excellent choice, especially for first time homebuyers. And don't forget the $8,000 tax credit for qualified 1st time home buyers who have a ratified contract by April 30, 2010 and settle before July, 2010.
