Ugh, Not Again

Crofton MD Real Estate - Richard IarossiIt's an unfortunate sign of the times, especially for those of us who have their email address all over the internet.

I woke up this morning to an inbox of several hundred returned emails. During the night someone is sending out junk with my return address. When the delivery fails, as it does hundreds of times a day, I'm stuck with the junk.

It happens every couple of months for a few days at a time, and then it just goes away.

The real problem is that I do have to look through this junk to make sure there isn't a legitimate email right smack in the middle of the bunch.

Anybody know a good way around this problem?

I do not know how to fix this. It sounds very annoying.

Richard, that is another problem we have to dealt with, I had that problem before and it went away.. . .as Realtors our email address is one of the most important tools we have. One suggestion is to have an alternative email just in case?

Richard, if you get an answer for this, let me know.  Something I have to deal with on occasion also.

Rich, this happened to me once a long time ago.  I contacted my then host (AOL), and they advised me that someone had my log in and password and the only way to stop it was to change email addresses, and get a new log in and password.  It was very disconcerting as they explained that my then email address would always be associated with spam.

I was not in business then as an agent, so it wasn't a big issue.  But now, it certainly would be, to change emails after so long with the same one.

I hope your solution, when you find it, is easier than mine was.

Hi Rich:

And I'm sure you don't want to change your e-mail address.

How annoying is that!

In Outlook express and i am sure in ouotlook too you can create rules. Since the emails all have the same subject or a couple of different canned subjects you can create a rule and send them to a folder . Theyn you can just delete that content which will leave you in your inbox with stuff that does not say Mail System delivery or no reply@  Now the only problem you will have is if you mess up and get an email that you have sent out that says no reply . However you can seperate all these out making them easier to delete

I have seen the same thing just not in the volume you are dealing with.  Good luck and let us know if you find a solution

Richard - this has happenned to me several times, but fortunately not with my business email address. You really don't have much that you can do if someone is spoofing your ip. Unfortunately, there is not a lot that you can do about it.

Richard, I get these all the time. Fortunately not as many as you've received. I filter them to the "Trash" folder. There is a chance that one of them may be a legitimate email. Looking for a better solution too.

Rich...

Once this happened to me for days, and I had to disable the accounts temporarily. And the worst part is, people get mad at YOU when you are nothing but a victim!

Well, as sure as I say it has never happened to me.....it probably will.  What a pain!  I hope someone will be able to help.

Hello Rich - I have built a couple of websites, and in fact am working on one now for my husband. One of the things you can do to avoid having your email address used in this way, is to encrypt your address on your website. There are free encryption services. What you do is use  CONTACT ME , or something similar, (like  EMAIL ME on your AR page),  instead of showing your address on your website, and encrypt the address within. I just checked your website, and your address is there for any kook to see, and pick up. Spammers just love this easy way to find addresses. It's not too late, it will at least prevent new spammers. Check out this site:

They are very clever, and are always coming up with ways to circumvent email rules, change IP addresses, etc. The above advice is a good way to nip it in the bud, so to speak.

Hi Rich:

OH NO...not again!

You definitely have to come up with a plan.

Have a great weekend.

Rich, I haven't had it happen to me, fortunately, I'll have to look into what Debi suggested.
