I am on Facebook, and Twitter, Linked In, and something called Yammer. Probably a couple of others I don't even remember. I will confess though, that I'm not the most prolific user, by any means. There is this pesky thing called work that keeps getting in the way.
For me, its been an evolution adding social media to my real estate toolbox. Some tools, like Active Rain, I use every day because the benefits are immediate and relevant to my business. Others are like the hex wrenches at the bottom of the toolbox...I use them every once in a while.
I've got followers and friends all over the place, and sometimes I don't know why. I'm really not that interesting but somehow people keep showing up wanting to follow me or be my friend. I even have Karl Rove following me on Twitter. Besides being a little scary, I guess he doesn't have much to do since the election.
I wonder though, am I overthinking this Facebook friends thing? First, let me say I don't really believe in coincidences, and I'm only a little paranoid.
In the last three days I've had over 20 requests to be my "friend" on Facebook. Go figure. What characterizes all of these requests is that they're all 20 somethings, which I don't have a lot in common with, and, I don't know one of them. I'm sure they don't know me either. OK, so why the heck do they want to be my friend?
I know I'm overthinking this, so I ask, do you just add Facebook friends whenever someone requests it, or are you more selective?

Richard.....I'm probably not the ideal person to be responding to this post, but I will anyway!! I'm from the old school....this social media thing has been a challenge.....I have a face book account and a couple of others that I never use and have forgotten about since AR....I am so addicted to Active Rain that this is the ONLY source that I use.....it gives me everything I need and more.....this is day #27 for me.
Rich...
Hmmmm could there be another Richard Iarossi that is a hot young twenty something???
Yammer? I don't even want to know what that is. I use FB as a way to keep in touch with family, friends, colleagues, and yes, even clients. I've refused, or ignored a couple, but if they're close to falling into the aforementioned categories, I'll usually add them. Some will say I'm not using FB to its full potential. But, as you mention, I don't know that I have the time to use every site to it's 'full potential.'
Richard -
I'm with ya. I've been using computers and the net for years. But, I have yet to warm to social networking.
Barbara, AR is my primary use too, but there is a benefit to the other social media.
Rich, A couple of years ago I was contacted by a collection agency. Apparantly, the other Richard Iarossi skipped out on some of his bills. Now I really won't add them as friends.
Jesse/Kathy, I dabble in most of it. I just can't find the time to do more than that.
Richard, in a word NO.
I don't accept all the ones that request me. Now IF they tell me how they know me, I will accept them, it only takes a few minutes to say, " I know you from AR, I read you on AG, I knew you in college."
But, friend requests for the sake of having a lot of friends doesn't float my boat.
Social Networking is well................networking.
I am jealous, I follow Karl Rove...but dont' think he follows me back...so give him a nudge.
Social Media is here to stay....it is changing the way we communicate so.........
Richard, you and I think alike. I still just DON'T get it.
Missy: My twenty-something son says NOT accepting friends is a major taboo. He says accept all then hide the ones you don't know. Having said that, I think a lot of people are just in a marketing race to see who can get the most friends on facebook.
Hi Rich:
HEY...don't sell yourself short...You ARE an interesting person!
I'm relatively new to Facebook & don't accept invites from people I don't know.
Hmmmm, I wonder how many more requests you're going to get now...
Richard, I accept friend requests if I know them and do not feel pressured to decline. I use facebook mainly to keep in touch long-distance with family and friends. I do not play the games or take the polls very often.
HEY RICH! If I don't know them - I just ignore it. If I sorta know them because of business - I invite them to become a Fan of my Facebook business page. You are VERY interesting, your posts are FUN -and I am happy to just follow you or friend you right here on Active Rain! -- Gab
Richard, I don't accept all the one's that request on Facebook, I look to see who they are and if I know them, are they in the same industry as I am? are they friends with other friends of mine? If they don't meet any of the criteria, then I say ignore. Good luck and congratulations on ticking over 200,000 points.
Richard, I am one of those friends on FB. But, I don't accept all of them, I want to know whom they know. Also, the strangest folks follow me on Twitter...I hardly ever peep though. They can do what they like. Karl Rove must have everyone in the world on his Tweet......
It's nice to be part of the Iarossi Intelligentsia.
When I get a friend request from someone I don't know, I first look to see if we have mutual friends. If it looks like a lot of my AR friends are their friends, I add them. If we don't have any mutual friends and I don't remember them from anywhere, I ignore them. As an aside, I thought you were keeping the Iarossi Intelligentsia between the two of us. Although if we had to add a new member, I'm glad it's Suzanne!
Richard, When it comes to social media, I am not a social as I need to be. Too much on my plate...
Helping you live your American dream...
Richard, I haven't gone on Tweeter yet, but I use Facebook, but only socially. Not very much for business. I guess it will all evolve to something, sometime!
