Do as we say, not as we do.

We have definitely entered into the political season here in Anne Arundel County, MD. I've had at least six aspiring office holders knock on my door here in Crofton, the mail carrier's back is hunched with all the post cards he has to deliver, and of course...the signs.

As Realtors we know about signs, don't we? Here, our temporary signs are restricted as to time and location. No earlier than Friday at 3 PM, and down by Monday at 9 AM. State and County highway right of ways are a no-no. Violate these simple rules and your signs are subject to removal...and you're subject to fines.

No so for politicians. These are the same citizens who make the rules we have to live by. However, when those same rules might impact something they want to do...the just exempt themselves. Do not call list isn't a problem for politicos, is it? Temporary signs, which would be illegal for any other citizen in the County, aren't a problem for politicians. Me, I'm going to vote for the person with the nicest looking sign. That's the way its done, isn't it?

Political Signs

Maryland has a primary on September 14, 2010. The winners of the primary will keep their signs up and the losers...well, those signs are destined for posterity. Sometime after the General Election on November 2nd, we'll get our sight lines back on the highways and byways.

Gee, I wonder what would happen if I put my directional right in the middle of this pack?

Your blog is just a piece of the big puzzle.

Don't get me started Richard!  Things have definitely turned in our great nation.  'do as I say-not as I do"...

DEBBIE: It's never seemed this bad in my lifetime.

They are a blight on the landscape and a blight in our lives before and after the elections.

LENN: I couldn't agree more. Rt. 3 in Crofton is looking pretty shabby with all the temporary signs.

How will you judge the nicest sign....they all look alike.  Just as the politicians all sound alike.  Ish!

It killed me when our town's new sign laws took effect. Everyone was in violation of posting signs...except for the politicians who litter our streets with theirs.

The same holds true for the Do Not Call list. Business entities, unless currently engaged with you, can not call anyone on the list. But politicians can call anyone they want!

Richard, I will let them put there signs all over the area, but what really burns me is that they don't  remove them after the election is over.

SUZANNE: I'm partial to red, white and blue.

CRAIG: Most of them are OK, but some politicians just don't have a clue.

GABE: They litter the roadways until the County sends someone out at taxpayer money to take them down.

Maybe the vote shouldn't be for the nicest sign but the least obnoxious campaign advertising. If the newspapers would run that contest, I think they would sell more papers.

Ahhh, Rich - you hit the nail on the head. Politicians exempt themselves from many of the same ordinances we have to live by, at all levels. Vote for the candidate with the fewest signs to block the view.

This is a pet peeve of mine as well Rich.  And they are not so quick to clean them up after the election either!

Rich, If you put your sign out there with the heap, you just may get voted into office! I'm just saying...ha-ha!

You know if you put your sign in that pack of signs the code enforcement officer would pull it and send you a ticket.

But you have a point....our reps in Washington are the same way they just vote in for themselves whatever they want for themselves and we must follow the rules.

Not going there and stepping off my soapbox.

Coming to you from Texas...

GLENN: I don't think politician and least obnoxious can be used in the same sentence.

SUSSIE: Soapboxes are just fine. I think there will be a lot of people on soapboxes this election season.

The sad thing is even after the general election both winners and losers signs will stay up for what seems to be forever.

I lose so many directionals that I have lost track. I kiss each one goodbye as I insert them in the ground.
