iPhone software update allows printing...maybe

The latest version of iPhone software, 4.2, now comes with a feature called AirPrint. Airprint works directly from Mail, Safari and Photos. Of course, there is a catch. Don’t you just hate it when there’s a catch?

For now, the feature only works with selected HP Printers. You can’t just print to any printer on your wireless network. The printer and the iPhone both have to be on the same wireless network.

Here is a list of the currently available printers.

Printers

I picked up one of the HP printers yesterday at Staples, on sale. The C310 works effortlessly with my home computers and my iPhone...all wireless. I'm sure AirPrint will be enhanced, and additional printers added in the near future. For now, its a pretty good start to be able to print directly from my iPhone.

Well, it's nice to see that capability. Sometimes you just need a paper copy. Slipping your iPhone under a clients door (even though they are very thin) is just not the way to deliver a document.

GLENN: That gets pretty expensive too.

Richard-

Apple is making such great strides in technology, I look forward to the day when my phone can take care of all my problems for me automatically, and I don't even have to get up in the morning. Maybe I'll send a missive to Steve Jobs right now. (Good heads up about the new printing option!)

I'm really excited about this feature, but will be much more excited when the compatibility is more wide-spread. I've got several printers already on our wireless network here, and it would be nice to just use what's already in place. That day will come, hopefully sooner rather than later.
