A CERTIFICATION FOR WHAT?

gavelOK, I must be living a sheltered life. I didn't even know this certification existed until I got the eMail yesterday offering me the opportunity to take the specialized training allowing me to "Become the Realtor of Choice for 2.4 Million People."

And what is that certification you ask? A Certified Real Estate Divorce Specialist. The complete home training package available for a mere $447.

I've had my share of listings where the couple are divorcing and it's not pretty.

I'm all for training, and I do believe that designations and certifications help our overall understanding of the business. I draw the line though, at becoming a "Divorce Specialist." If its your bag you can check out the new certification at Realestatedivorcespecialist.com.

Different strokes for different folks.

You have got to be kidding....That is a bit like staking isn't it?

Rich...

I did NOT know that, but do you REALLY want to be in the middle of THAT? What's next, certified obituary reading expert?

"Certified Real Estate Divorce Specialist" Wow! new to me also....  Personally don't see how it's going to get me anymore business????

Another made up certification.  It seems as if every time you turn around someone is coming up with a new "specialty."  What is sad is there will be just enough agents who sign up, pay their money and then discover that none of those 2.4 million people care about their real estate specialty.

Hi Richard,

This one is new to me - but I agree with you that there are an awful lot of certifications out there - a lot of which are junk.

In a lot of cases, these certifications are not any different from reading a book only that you get to put some letters next to your name.

Sounds like misery to me.

Now that will probably lead to some happy appointments! Hey, if you got the money there is a certification for everyone!

Richard-there seems to be a certification for something..and divorce????  Doesn't make for a fun environment..or happy occasions..but I suppose someone has to do it right???  I shake my head...there are so many certifications...designations...and awards available today and we wonder why sometimes the consumers are confused! :)

Is this another NAR offering? how does that combine with other offerings like the green certificate? They  should offer a certificate for working with divorced large people, and then combined with the green - it could be the divorced jolly green giant certification - now how useful would that be!

Ella, I wish I was kidding but did get the email offering me the course.

Richard, I've been in the middle of divorce's trying to sell their house and as you know, it can get pretty nasty. I think you just gave somebody else a new idea with the obituary reference.

Mark, I can't figure it out either. I can just see the new advertising program though.

Cindy, There is just something about agents that many will throw their hard earned money at anything coming down the pike.

Mark, I wonder if there is any oversight with certifications?

Bonnie, You're right. I won't trade on anyone elses misery.

Gary, Multi room listing appointments isn't going to be in my future.

Midori, Heck, agents are confused too.

Lise, There's a niche for everyone I guess.

I've got the same emails, but who wants to specialize in divorces how messy.  I also got a letter about getting a feng shui designation.

Posted by Quad Cities My RealTeam (Mel Foster Co.) (Keith Allen Allborty ) over 3 years ago

Richard, Thanks, you made my morning. I think this designation deals in separations, you from your money:)

Posted by Paul Henderson, Broker, Realtor® Tacoma,Gig Harbor,DuPont,HartstenePointe (RE/MAX Professionals & Four Seasons Inc.) over 3 years ago

Kristin, I agree. There are a lot of things I could be associated with, but I'm not sure that's one of them.

Quad, I'm sure we all get emails every day offering something new. Delete key.

Paul, Great play on words...separating us from our money.

this is one that I can't believe. How about send me your money designation?

Posted by Donald Urschalitz P.A. Realtor ABR RSPS North Palm Beach County (One World Realty Inc.) over 3 years ago

Kind of like some patents...just because it's on paper doesn't mean it's of any value.

Posted by Cynthia McMahon (Keller Williams Realty Mid-Willamette) over 3 years ago

I'm looking at working with a few of our local divorce attorneys to see if I can help people in a tough situation, but I don't see how spending the money for a designation will be any more valuable than simply establishing good relationships.

Posted by W. Darrell Walters - Envoy Mortgage Ltd over 3 years ago

Donald, Where and how much?

Cynthia, I completely agree. I believe that designations have a higher bar than certifications.

Darrell, Been there, done that. They can be very challenging listings.

Posted by Richard Iarossi, Crofton MD Real Estate, Annapolis MD Real Estate (Long and Foster® Real Estate, Inc.) over 3 years ago

Yeah, I've heard of it and have zero interest in pursuing it either.  For me, I wouldn't like to increase my divorce clientele. The ones I have are quite enough.

Trunda, When they tell you they're still friends, its time to run.

Posted by Richard Iarossi, Crofton MD Real Estate, Annapolis MD Real Estate (Long and Foster® Real Estate, Inc.) over 3 years ago

That's definitely a specialty that I don't think I will be aiming for any time soon. I've only done one deal with a couple who were divorcing. Wow! I'll leave it at that.
