A RUN ON BREAD, MILK AND...TOILET PAPER

Bird FeederYou hardy stock from the snow producing states probably won't understand this post fully. Today, in Maryland we're experiencing our first "snow" of the winter. Around here, two to three inches and it's going to paralyze the entire area. Schools are already closed.

I'm OK with the safety aspect because we're probably going to get some ice along with the snow later.

We're also going to experience another phenomena that might be unique to our area here. That is, a grocery store run on the staples of life; bread, milk and toilet paper.

As soon as they forecast any snow whatsoever, everyone suddenly realizes that they don't have enough bread, milk and toilet paper. I guess that's the first aid kit for home snow situations.

It doesn't matter that we were at Sam's Club over the weekend and bought the 36 pack, you can never have enough toilet paper in a crisis.

I'm going out now and I hope they still have some of that nice soft double ply left.

Being from Maryland myself (and not that far away from you) I completely agree with what you are saying.  They close schools for a reason (to keep people off of the roads), but they still go to the store even if they already have more than what they need.  IT IS CRAZY!!!

LOL...I am in Texas and it is the exact same way!  I grew up in Colorado though so I got to experience the "real" winters.  Even with that said...I still jump on the band wagon and head to the grocery store to get needed supplies for the "just in case."

Sure enough, I was one of those people that needed to hustle to the grocery store for milk.  I decided if I was going to be "stuck" home all day with the kids I needed to be at least able to make pancakes.  I was good on toilet paper and I didn't even think about bread.  Guess what I just checked.  We are out of bread - I guess its back to the store for me :)

Oh my - first snow storm?  Here in NY & CT - we're up to like - 14 - ?? Another due tonight and 2 more expected this week!  I'm so over winter!

Also, in case of electric outages - don't forget candles, matches and save some water - to drink and to be able to wash up after using the toilet paper!  :-)

FUNNY - Great picture! I always stock up on chicken wings and snacks when a storm is on the way!

Rich,

It's funny how a perceived crunch like this will affect shopping behavior. :)

Jared, I'm originally from NJ so to me this isn't really a snow storm.

Mike, The closer you get to DC the worse the drivers get.

Tara, I know it happens every once in a while but I still can't picture snow in Texas.

Stacey-Ann, No french toast I guess then.

Diana, Yep, first for this part of Maryland this year. We keep praying it stays up North :)

Rich, That's just cruel. I knew I should have put the squirrel picture in instead.

Steve, Around here its like clockwork. Snow forecast...rush to the store.

HI Richard, well the weatherguy is saying even down here in Austin Icy roads are a possibility tonight. Lucky for us we did the Costco thing on Sunday.  I will hunkerdown and stay home at the HINT of icyroads.  I'm bringing in the firewood for tonight just in case we lose power and the fireplace becomes our heat source.

Richard - I completely understand the mindset of the Maryland citizens.  Here in Nashville, if the forecast calls for snow no matter the number of inches, we Nashvillians declare a "Kroger Alert".  After all, there is no telling how many days the 1" will keep us house bound.  All the best to you and your business.

Richard - a little inclement weather sometimes scares the sh cra doo doo out of people and they just want to maintain hygiene. Do you remember when Johnny Carson cracked a joke that started a several weeks long shortage of TP?

Toilet paper is definitely one of those "must have" items!

HI RICH!  "Hunker down" my friend!  I had to re-read it - I thought you bought a 36-Pack -- not a 36 roll pack!  I think I would have bought both!  I hope Mother Nature goes easy for you ... Brrr.... -- Gabrielle

I haven't experienced being snowed in, and can't say I know, but those items are definitely essentials.  I didn't mean to giggle, but you got a great way of stating the facts in a lighter way.
